5 DAYS TREK MOUNT KILIMANJARO

The Marangu Route stands as the most popular, easiest, and shortest path to reach Uhuru Peak, also referred to as the Tourist Route or Coca Cola Route. Around 70% of climbers choose this route due to its predominantly easy trekking terrain, although the final section leading to the summit presents challenges. Surprisingly, despite being the simplest option, it also has the highest failure rate, mainly attributed to poor planning. Thus, it is strongly advised to approach this route with seriousness, proper organization, and strict adherence to safety precautions.

All the campgrounds along this trail offer various commodities, including chocolates, beer, soft drinks, and mineral water, and they are all connected to the Park Office through radio communication. The route can be completed in five days, but it is recommended to allocate an extra day for acclimatization at the Horombo hut, which is the only campsite on Kilimanjaro equipped with beds and mattresses.

Often known as the 'Coca Cola route' due to its popularity and easy accessibility, the Marangu route remains the favored approach to reach Kilimanjaro's summit. For those with limited time, the five-day option provides a hurried but feasible way to conquer the Roof of Africa.

5 Days Trek Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 1: Moshi - Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut

You will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi and driven to Kilimanjaro National Park. There, you will meet your guides and commence your journey through the lush jungle that blankets the lower levels of Kilimanjaro. The hike, taking approximately 5-6 hours through this ancient forest, provides a mini-safari experience with the chance to spot animals like black and white colobus monkeys along the trail. Your overnight stay will be at the modern Mandara Huts, equipped with amenities like solar lighting and flush toilets, a luxury that won't be encountered again soon!

Day 2: Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut

An early start is required today, as you have a full day of hiking ahead! The route leads from the verdant rainforest to the rugged alpine zone, covering over 11 kilometers until you reach the Maundi Crater. If the weather permits, you'll get a glimpse of the Kibo Glacier before settling in for the night.

Day 3: Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut

Today demands another long day of hiking as you make your way to Kibo Hut to prepare for the summit attempt. After ascending about 1,000 meters, you'll reach your final hydration point at 4,130 meters before arriving at Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Ensure you drink plenty of water during your early meal, as you'll need to rise early tomorrow for the final ascent.

Day 4: Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut

An early start is essential today – just after midnight, to be precise! Your climbing crew will wake you up with a cup of hot tea and a quick snack to energize you for the challenging day ahead. You'll be trekking in complete darkness for the next 5-7 hours, making your way towards Stella Point, which you'll reach just before dawn. From there, it's another two hours of strenuous hiking until you achieve your ultimate goal: Uhuru Peak.

Day 5: Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - Moshi

Today is a significant day as you have one final breakfast on the mountain before descending to the Marangu Gate. The hike covers about 20 kilometers, but the continuous descent makes it much easier compared to the ascent. Once you arrive at the gate, you can celebrate with your porters and guides, express your appreciation for their efforts, and receive your well-earned certificate of achievement. Your driver will then take you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for some much-deserved relaxation.
